What a Cloakroom Installation Includes
A cloakroom — also called a downstairs WC, guest toilet, or half-bath — is one of the most practical additions to any home. It provides a ground-floor toilet and hand basin without guests or family needing to access the main bathroom upstairs. Despite the compact footprint, a well-designed cloakroom makes a significant difference to daily convenience.
Daniel Couchman designs and installs cloakrooms from scratch — including plumbing connections, waste routing, tiling, plastering, decoration, and fitting of all sanitaryware. Whether you are converting an understairs cupboard, a utility space, or a section of a hallway, Daniel creates a functional, attractive room from whatever space is available.
Every cloakroom project begins with a free design consultation. Daniel measures the space, discusses layout options, and advises on the best sanitaryware for the available footprint. Compact wall-hung toilets, corner basins, and slimline furniture are all options that maximise space without compromising on quality or usability.
This is not a generic plumbing job — it is a complete room transformation. Plumbing, electrics, ventilation, tiling, plastering, painting, and finishing are all completed by Daniel personally. One point of contact, one consistent standard, from first measurement to final inspection.
Our Work in Action

The Cost of Not Having a Downstairs WC
Not having a ground-floor toilet is a daily inconvenience that affects your entire household — and it becomes increasingly impractical as circumstances change. Whether you are hosting guests, managing young children, or accommodating elderly family members, the absence of a downstairs WC creates friction that compounds over time.
Beyond daily convenience, a cloakroom is one of the highest-return home improvements available. Estate agents consistently identify a downstairs WC as one of the top features buyers look for.
- ✗Guests must access your private upstairs bathroom — passing through bedrooms and personal spaces
- ✗Elderly residents or those with mobility challenges face stair-climbing for every toilet visit — increasing fall risk significantly
- ✗Families with young children deal with rushed trips upstairs multiple times per day — a particular problem during toilet training
- ✗Homes without a downstairs WC are less attractive to buyers — it is one of the first features searched for on property portals
- ✗Muddy boots, dirty hands from the garden, and post-exercise clean-up all require a trip upstairs — tracking mess through the house
- ✗Not having a ground-floor WC reduces your home's accessibility rating and may affect its suitability for future needs
How It Works
Space Assessment & Design
Daniel measures the available space — understairs cupboard, utility area, hallway section, or garage conversion — and designs the optimal layout. Sanitaryware is selected to fit the specific dimensions.
Plumbing & Waste Routing
Supply and waste connections are routed from the nearest available points. Soil pipe connections, macerator installation (if gravity drainage is not available), and water supply are all completed before fitting.
Building & Preparation
Walls are built or adapted as needed. Plastering, tanking (if required), and floor preparation are completed. Ventilation is installed — either mechanical extract or connection to existing ducting.
Fitting & Finishing
Toilet, basin, and any furniture are installed. Tiling, painting, lighting, and finishing details are completed. Every element is fitted to the same standard as a full bathroom installation.
Final Inspection
All plumbing connections are pressure-tested. Ventilation is checked. You inspect the completed cloakroom with Daniel, and nothing is signed off until you are completely satisfied. All work is guaranteed.
What You Get
Daily Convenience
A ground-floor toilet eliminates unnecessary trips upstairs — saving time, effort, and frustration for every member of your household, every single day.
Added Property Value
A cloakroom typically adds £5,000–£10,000 to property value — often exceeding the installation cost. It is one of the highest-return home improvements available.
Guest-Ready
Visitors use the downstairs WC without accessing your private upstairs bathroom. Your personal space stays private.
Accessibility Improvement
A ground-floor WC removes the need for elderly or mobility-challenged residents to navigate stairs for basic needs — a genuine quality-of-life improvement.
Compact Space Expertise
Daniel specialises in maximising small spaces. Wall-hung toilets, corner basins, and slimline furniture create a fully functional room in as little as 1m × 1.2m.
Complete Service
Plumbing, waste routing, electrics, ventilation, tiling, plastering, and decoration — all completed by one tradesman. No coordination required.
Cloakroom Installation: Design, Materials & Considerations
Space Requirements
The minimum practical size for a cloakroom is approximately 1m × 1.2m — enough for a compact toilet and a small basin. Understairs spaces, former storage cupboards, and sections of utility rooms or hallways are all commonly converted. Daniel has installed cloakrooms in spaces as small as 0.8m × 1.4m using wall-hung sanitaryware and creative layout planning.
Sanitaryware Options
Compact cloakrooms require carefully chosen sanitaryware. Wall-hung toilets free up floor space and make cleaning easier. Back-to-wall toilets with concealed cisterns provide a clean, modern look. Corner basins and cloakroom-specific narrow basins (typically 350–450mm wide) maximise available space. Daniel advises on the best options for your specific room dimensions.
Drainage & Macerators
Gravity drainage (connecting directly to a soil pipe) is always the preferred option. When gravity drainage is not feasible — for example, when the cloakroom is far from the soil stack or below the drainage level — a macerator pump can be installed. Macerators pump waste through small-bore pipes to the nearest soil connection. Daniel advises on the best drainage solution and ensures all connections meet building regulations.
Ventilation Requirements
Building regulations require mechanical ventilation in any room with a toilet that does not have an opening window. A quiet extract fan connected to external ducting is the standard solution. In cloakrooms without external walls, ducting can be routed through ceiling voids. Daniel installs ventilation as part of every cloakroom project.
Tiling & Decoration
Even in compact spaces, quality tiling and decoration make a dramatic difference. Feature walls, patterned tiles, and statement basins can turn a functional WC into a design highlight. Daniel provides guidance on tile selection, colour coordination, and finishes that complement your home's existing interior.
Understairs Conversions
Understairs spaces present unique challenges — sloping ceilings, limited headroom, and irregular shapes. Daniel has extensive experience with understairs cloakrooms and designs layouts that make the most of every centimetre. In most cases, the toilet is positioned under the lowest part of the staircase, with the basin and door positioned where headroom is greatest.
